Thursday's second session of the TBA National Yearling Sale in Johannesburg, South Africa saw four more yearlings added to the seven-figure club at the three-day auction. Jehan Malherbe of Form Bloodstock was especially busy, signing for the day's three highest-priced lots. Those were topped by lot 330, a filly by Captain Al (SAf) from Varsfontein Stud for R1.8-million. The bay hails from the immediate family of champion 3-year-old filly and Triple Tiara winner Cherry On The Top (SAf).
Malherbe had earlier gone to R1.6-million for lot 253, a son of Fort Wood from Wilgerbosdrift Stud. He is out of the triple graded winner and three times Grade 1 second Welwitschia (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Malherbe also signed at R1.4-million for lot 235, a daughter of Var consigned by Klipdrif Stud as agent. She is out of the G1 SA Fillies Classic winner Urabamba (SAf) (Fort Wood), and is a half-sister to the Grade 3-placed Coplapo (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}).
Trainer Candice Bass of Bass Racing also got in on the action at the top of the market, spending R1.1-million on a colt by Dynasty (SAf) from Avontuur Stud (lot 327).
The TBA National Yearling Sale stages its third and final session on Friday. Full statistics will be provided upon conclusion of the sale.
