+SUGAR QUEEN (f, 2, Gemologist–Miss Patricia, by Indian Charlie) , one of two 4-5 shots in the Wednesday opener at Belmont, out-dueled her co-favored rival and kicked clear late to a first-out success for the Todd Pletcher barn. Bought for $285,000 at OBS March after breezing one furling in :10 flat, the bay showed a quintet of easy workouts at Palm Beach Downs, capped off by a half-mile gate breeze in :49 3/5 (12/17) Apr. 24. Breaking smartly, Sugar Queen was second in the opening furlong to co-choice Our Girl Abby (Majestic Warrior), a closing third on debut Apr. 9 at Keeneland, but soon edged in front of that one to open up a length and a half. Our Girl Abby re-engaged from the two-path passing a :23.32 quarter and the two chalks were inseparable at the top of the lane. Switching leads at the three-sixteenth pole, Sugar Queen began to edge away soon after and widened in the final furlong as Our Girl Abby drifted out a bit, earning a 3 1/4-length graduation. Our Girl Abby just held on for second over late-running firster Goodbye Brockley (Cosmonaut). The winner's third dam is a half to 1987 GI Breeders' Cup Sprint heroine Very Subtle (Hoist the Silver). Her dam failed to produce a foal last season and was bred back to Empire Maker. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $50,000. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
