Mt Veeder, an easy winner in front-running fashion at Del Mar Aug. 15, was pounded down to 2-5 favoritism and did not disappoint at Los Alamitos Sunday evening. Pressed by a rival to his inside as soon as the gates opened, the $200,000 KEESEP yearling shook off that rival after a first quarter in :22.82 and rolled into the home stretch with a full head of steam, three paths off the pine. Mt Veeder was on cruise control from there, as rivals gave futile chase, and streaked home a daylight winner. Paynes Prairie closed to take place honors. “He's a fast horse and [jockey] Martin [Garcia] just sat on him an dlet him do his job,” said Mike Marlow, assistant trainer to winning conditioner Bob Baffert. “He looked good all the way. He did it pretty easy.” The winner's dam, a half to MGSW and MGISP Two Item Limit (Twining), was covered by Ghostzapper this spring.
