Gamble's Ghost became the latest 'TDN Rising Star' to to make the grade as she overcame some tense moments to prove a much-the-best winner of Woodbine's GIII Mazarine S. An 8 1/4-length debut victress going seven local furlongs over the reopposing next-out winner Conquest Soprano (Super Saver) Aug. 14, the Dalos homebred finished a distant second as the chalk in the grassy GII Natalma S. Sept. 12. Clearly the horse to beat while facing just four foes here, the prohibitive chalk bided her time off slow early splits, and was shuffled back to last entering the straight. Seemingly hesitant to squeeze her way through a seam as Luis Contreras tried to get her going, Gamble's Ghost gathered her courage and charged ahead to score.

“The last time [in the Natalma] she did not break well and I think it was belated when she got running and wasn't able to catch a free-running leader,” offered trainer Carroll. “We had some anxious moments today. Luis might have been pretty confident, but when I saw her trapped in there I was pretty concerned. She is a very brave filly and she went through and pricked her ears and had fun.”

The winner, who hails from the extended female family of Irish champion sprinter Bluebird (Storm Bird), has a yearling half-brother by Hat Trick and a weanling half-sister by Scat Daddy. “This one is special because her dam passed away this year,” revealed owner Ivan Dalos. “I have some special memories of her.”
