Amis Gizmo (Giant Gizmo), beaten a half-length in second as the favorite in the Queen's Plate at Woodbine last time July 3, was favored at 6-5 in Tuesday evening's Prince of Wales S. at Fort Erie despite the presence of re-opposing Sir Dudley Digges (Gio Ponti). He proved the bettors right in his first conventional dirt try. Drafting behind the pacesetters while keen to do more early, Amis Gizmo was guided out into the clear by rider Luis Contreras into the home bend, and dragged himself all the way to the front in what seemed like a potentially premature move. Entering the lane with a large cushion, the Ivan Dalos homebred's fate was never in doubt from there, and he reported home 5 1/2 lengths clear. The hulking Leavem in Malibu (Malibu Moon), last early, uncorked a powerful turn run of his own to prove second best. Longshot Niigon's Edge (Niigon) spiced up the trifecta. Sir Dudley Digges dropped back along the home bend and checked in sixth.

Amis Gizmo debuted successfully in Woodbine's six-panel Simcoe S. last September, and added the Bull Page S. later that month. He aired by five lengths in the Frost King S. Nov. 4, and ended his juvenile campaign with a clear-cut victory in the Kingarvie S. in his first attempt around two turns. Fifth in the only open race of his career in the Wando S. on the freshly installed Woodbine Tapeta Apr. 24, he bounced back with a 2 1/2-length victory in the June 12 Plate Trial S. The chestnut had a clear lead into the stretch of the Queen's Plate, only to get run down late. The Canadian Triple Crown commences with the Breeders' S. going 12 panels on the Woodbine grass Aug. 21.
Pedigree Notes:
This is the second Canadian Classic victory for longtime Ontario-based owner/breeder Ivan Dalos, who was profiled in the TDN late last year. He and trainer Josie Carroll finished third in the 2014 Prince of Wales with subsequent Breeders' winner Ami's Holiday (Harlan's Holiday), whose dam is a full-sister to the dam of Amis Gizmo. The owner/trainer team also took Keeneland's GIII Commonwealth S. this April with Amis Gizmo's year-older half-brother Ami's Flatter, and annexed the GIII Selene S. in May with 'TDN Rising Star' Gamble's Ghost (Ghostzapper), who was seventh facing the boys in the Queen's Plate. Ami's Gizmo has an unraced 2-year-old half-brother named Ami's Samurai (First Samurai); a yearling half-sister by First Samurai; and a weanling half-sister by Goldencents.
