Medicean (GB) (Machiavellian-Mystic Goddess, by Storm Bird), whose Group 1 winners include Dutch Art (GB) and Nannina (GB), has been pensioned from stud duties at Cheveley Park Stud after suffering fertility problems. The 20-year-old was bred and raced by Cheveley Park and trained by Sir Michael Stoute. He won the G2 Celebration Mile at three and was even better at four, taking the G1 Lockinge S., G1 Eclipse S. and G2 Queen Anne S.
Medicean entered stud at his birthplace in 2002 at a fee of £15,000 and his first crop included the G1 Fillies' Mile and G1 Coronation S. winner Nannina. G1 Middle Park S. and G1 Prix Morny winner and successful sire Dutch Art hailed from his second crop, while his other Group 1 winners include Dubai Duty Free scorer Al Shemali; GI Secretariat S. winner Bayrir (Fr); G1 Sun Chariot S. winner Siyouma (Ire) and German scorers Neatico (Ger) and Almerita (Ger).
Medicean will enjoy his retirement at Cheveley Park Stud, whose Managing Director Chris Richardson described the horse as, “one of the kindest horses to be around, who I feel was underrated by many, having sired some 10 Group 1 winners during his successful career.”
