“TDN Rising Star” Timeline (Hard Spun) took his perfect record to three-for-three with his first graded score in a sloppy renewal of Belmont's GII Peter Pan S. Saturday, the traditional local prep for the June 10 GI Belmont S. Away a touch slow, the 2-5 favorite quickly found his footing and rushed up to sit on pacsetting Meantime (Shackleford)'s heels in second through an opening quarter in :24.02 with a clear lead on the rest of the field, which was being headed by Impressive Edge (Harlan's Holiday) in third. Timeline took some of the pressure off the leader, sitting back a bit through a half in :47.68, but ranged up once again on Meantime's outside approaching the bend. Meantime floated out wide turning for home as Javier Castellano quickly re-routed Timeline, sending him up along the fence. Meantime came back in a few paths, briefly running shoulder-to-shoulder with the chalk, but Timeline kept on finding and splashed clear of the pacesetter late to win by 3 1/2 lengths. Impressive Edge completed the trifecta and the winner's stablemate Take Your Guns (Blame) checked in fourth.
“The horse ran great,” winning trainer Chad Brown remarked. “There's was a little anxious moment on the turn there. I couldn't really see if he lost the bridle a little bit or what. Javier said he kind of ran in spots a little bit at the end of the race. He kind of had to use him a little bit out of the gate to get his footing and then felt good. Then at one point in the race, again, he felt like he maybe he should've went with the going just a touch. Then he cut the corner and got on better footing and the horse gave him another good kick.”
As for Timeline's future plans, Brown said, “I'll speak to Bill Farish, who manages this horse, and we'll go from there. We had spoken earlier in the day that if we had some success here, the [GI] Haskell [Invitational S. at Monmouth Park July 30] is a race that we have a lot of interest in, with maybe one race between now and then. He doesn't strike me as a mile-and-a-half horse, but I'm not going to declare him out of the [Belmont].”
Timeline made a wide, late charge to don cap and gown by a half-length when unveiled in a seven-panel test at Gulfstream Mar. 4. The $500,000 KEESEP buy made a mockery of a first-level allowance going a sloppy mile at Aqeuduct next time out Apr. 6, romping by 13 1/2 lengths for a gaudy 101 Beyer Speed Figure and the “TDN Rising Star” moniker.
Pedigree Notes:
Timeline hails from a deep female family developed by Helen Alexander, Helen Groves and Dorothy Matz. His second dam Aldiza (Storm Cat) captured the 1998 GI Go for Wand H. and finished second in the GI Test S. the year prior for her breeders and Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey. She produced GIII Turnback the Alarm H. winner Altesse (A.P. Indy); SW and GSP Where's the Moon (Malibu Moon); and GSP Alchemist (A.P. Indy), who in turn produced Grade III winner Far From Over (Blame) and MGISP And Why Not (Street Cry {Ire}). This is also the family of champion Althea and MGSW Atelier.
The winner's dam Azorina (Empire Maker) failed to hit the board in two starts for her breeders and trainer David Carroll. Timeline is the first foal out of the 8-year-old mare, who has since produced the juvenile filly Mrs Hughes (Into Mischief) and a yearling colt by Hard Spun. Her 2017 Hard Spun colt was sadly still born. Broodmare sire Empire Maker has been having a very productive May thanks to his son Bodemeister, who sired impressive GI Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming in his first crop.
