Hard Spun's Promising Run Takes the Al Rashidiya

Promising Run | racingfotos.com

Promising Run made the most of a five-pound weight break from the males to earn a third group win in Thursday's G2 Al Rashidiya S. at Meydan. Winner of the G2 Rockfel S. at Newmarket as a 2-year-old in 2015, Promising Run ran twice at the Dubai carnival last year but was relegated to second on both occasions behind 'TDN Rising Star' Polar River (Congrats), in the UAE 1000 Guineas Trial and the Listed UAE 1000 Guineas. Third behind So Mi Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G3 Musidora S. at York in May, Promising Run settled for fifth, beaten 3 1/4 lengths, behind Qemah (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot and was sixth in Glorious Goodwood's G3 Thoroughbred S. the following month. Shipping to Turkey for the one-mile G3 Istanbul Trophy on Sept. 3, Promising Run prevailed by a half-length, and was fourth in Newmarket's Listed Rosemary S. over the same trip Sept. 23. Stepping up to a mile and four furlongs for the G1 Qipco British Champions Fillies and Mares S. Oct. 15, Promising Run managed to beat just two home, and she appeared much more comfortable dropping back in trip on Thursday. Allowed to stalk the pace by Jim Crowley as Light The Lights took the early initiative on the outside, Promising Run spotted the pacesetter about three lengths as the field ran into the turn. Taking closer order passing the 600 metre mark, the filly swung three-wide into the stretch. The highly regarded Light The Lights soon looked in trouble and Promising Run capitalized, looming up on his outside as Earnshaw made an eye-catching run on her outside from the back of the pack. Promising Run collared Light The Lights in the dying strides to record her third group win in three countries.

Pedigree Notes…

Promising Run is the sixth produce of Aviacion, a Group 1 winner in her native Brazil. Promising Run's fourth dam is Swansea (Turn To), a half-sister to Secretariat. Aviacion's next-best produce is the G3 Lillie Langtry S.-second Arabian Comet (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), and she has a 2-year-old filly by Medaglia d'Oro to come. She was barren last year after being covered by Dawn Approach (Ire).
