He was all the rage in the paddock, on the toteboard, and as it turns out, on the track as well. Hey Tuff Guy (Life Is Good) demolished a field of Churchill Downs maidens on the Memorial Day card to sail home as the newest 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard'.
Coming into the contest with five listed works to his credit, the morning praise turned into afternoon acclaim as the betting public hammered him down from 3-1 on the morning line to 3-5 favoritism by the time the gates opened.
Breaking well to the far outside, he was outfooted early by Bourbon Town (Echo Town) for the lead, but was making up the distance with every stride as they swung into the bend after an opening quarter in :22.50. Blowing by the early leader midway on the turn without any urging from Mario Gutierrez, Hey Tuff Guy wrapped the race before they even hit the top of the lane.
The pair was eight lengths clear of the field turning for home, and the son of Life Is Good bore a striking resemblance to his brilliant sire as he rolled home to dominate by 7 3/4 lengths. Bourbon Town steadily faded in the lane as Gun for Glory (Gun Runner) claimed second and Time for Action (Not This Time) got up for third. The final time was 1:04.77.
Hey Tuff Guy is the third winner for freshman sire Life Is Good, and is the first 'Rising Star' for the WinStar Farm-based stallion.
The victor is the second to the races behind his unplaced older half-sister Roses to Riches (Quality Road) for their ultra-accomplished dam, Hotshot Anna. A 12-time winner during her racing career, the track record-setting daughter of Trappe Shot claimed seven stakes races with three at the graded level as well as claiming black-type on all three surfaces. She changed hands to Frederick and May Construction for $400,000 in 2022 at the Keeneland November sale while pregnant with Roses to Riches. Hey Tuff Guy is her most recent to the races, and she has a yearling colt by Cody's Wish to her credit. She was bred to McKinzie for 2026.
Hotshot Anna is a half-sister to MGSW Our Secret Agent (Secret Circle), who changed hands to Winchell Thoroughbreds at the same Keeneland November sale for $375,000, and who has a 2026 filly by Gun Runner at foot.
