Saturday's Listed Betfred Derby Trial S. winner Humphrey Bogart (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) has been supplemented to the G1 Investec Derby at a cost of £75,000. The Richard Hannon charge was making his third start of the year in the Derby Trial, and had previously finished second to G1 Investec Oaks fancy So Mi Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in Epsom's Listed Investec Derby Trial Apr. 20.
“The situation we faced was asking our owners if they were prepared to pay, and a lot of them are well-heeled owners with a background in the game,” said James Ramsden, racing manager for owner Chelsea Thoroughbreds. “They are some really good people. Some have owned horses for years, but two of them have never even had a leg in a horse before.”
“It wasn't really a question of the money, it was whether it was the right thing to do by the horse,” Ramsden added. “We know he loves Epsom and he gets the trip, so they are two vitally important boxes ticked. You can analyse it until the cows come home, but we know the answer to those two so know it is down to ability.”
Godolphin confirmed Tuesday it would supplement Tattersalls Millions 3YO Trophy winner Linguistic (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and Sunday's G2 Prix Greffulhe winner Cloth Of Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) to the Derby.
