'Chatterbox' Talk of the Town in Delaware

I'm a Chatterbox | Hoofprints

It was a bit of deja vu for I'm a Chatterbox (Munnings) when the tote board flashed indicating an objectionfollowing her win in the GI Delaware H. Saturday. One week shy of a year ago, the Carolyn and Fletcher Gray homebred was taken down for interference in the stretch after crossing the line a nose to the good of Curalina (Curlin) in Saratoga's GI CCA Oaks. In this instance, the jockey of runner-up Paid Up Subscriber (Candy Ride {Arg}) claimed foul for interference at the break after the 3-5 chalk veered left sharply exiting the four-hole, bumping into her inside neighbor and causing a chain reaction. However, this time around her victory was by a decisive 2 1/4 lengths and the stewards ruled in her favor, allowing the result to stand.

Jockey Florent Geroux pulled hard on the right rein in an effort to straighten out I'm a Chatterbox and, despite the filly tossing her head in objection, finally achieved his goal at the back of the pack as Mei Ling (Empire Maker), who avoided the early trouble from the five-hole, took command. The 4-year-old wasn't last for long, sprinting up the three path to look the pacesetter in the eye as she clocked an opening quarter in :23.73. Rated a bit by Geroux to stalk from second through a half in :47.72 and three-quarters in 1:12.82, the chestnut immediately seized control when given her head at the quarter-pole and poured it on in the stretch, powering clear to win going away over last out GII Fleur de Lis H. winner Paid Up Subscriber, whose jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr. lodged the objection which was disallowed.

Making a name for herself after dominating the Fair Grounds series of GI Kentucky Oaks preps last winter, I'm a Chatterbox closed well to finish third to stablemate Lovely Maria (Majesticperfection) beneath the Twin Spires on the first Friday in May. She crossed the wire first, but was disqualified and placed second for interference in the CCA Oaks and completed the exacta again when seeking redemption next out in the Spa's GI Alabama S. last summer. Finally earning her first win at the highest level with a convincing score in Parx's GI Cotillion S. last September, the blaze-faced chestnut finished a troubled eighth in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff at Keeneland Oct. 30. Gaining ground late in her seasonal bow in Lexington's GIII Doubledogdare S. Apr. 22, she ran out of real estate and finished second as the 1-2 chalk behind Brooklynsway (Giant Gizmo), who romped in a listed stake at Indiana Saturday, and rebounded with a dominant 8 1/2-length score over a field of overmatched foes in this venue's Obeah H. June 11.

Prior to producing I'm a Chatterbox, her dam Chit Chatter's most accomplished offspring were the stakes-placed pair of Pegasus Again (Fusaichi Pegasus) and Lady Bear (Bluegrass Cat). Chit Chatter is also responsible for the unraced juvenile colt Zinger (The Factor), who RNA'd for $285,000 at last year's Keeneland September just a few hours before I'm a Chatterbox won the Cotillion (click here for sale story), and a yearling filly by Flat Out. She was bred back to Munnings last year, but failed to get in foal.
