Joan G. ìJodyî Phillips, daughter of Darby Dan Farm's patriarch John W. Galbreath and mother of the operation's current managing partner John W. Phillips, passed away Monday at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She was 83. Born into one of racing's great families, Joan helped maintain the storied tradition of Darby Dan, which John W. Galbreath founded in Galloway, Ohio, in 1935, and later expanded to the old Idle Hour Stock Farm property in Lexington, Kentucky. In partnership with brother Dan Galbreath and under the Galbreath/Phillips Racing Partnership banner, Joan, who was married to the late James W. (Wally) Phillips, bred stakes winners Triumph at Dawn, Don't Read My Lips, Majestic Dream, Merit Wings, and Grade I winners Plenty of Grace, Tribulation, Memories of Silver and Soaring Softly.
