Markus Jooste, who has raced horses globally under the moniker Mayfair Speculators, will be subpoenaed after declining an invitation to appear before parliament joint-committees, according to South African news site Fin24. Jooste has been in hot water since early December, when he resigned as chief executive officer of Steinhoff International after accounting irregularities were discovered within the retail holding company. Jooste's lawyers reportedly told the committees Jooste declined the invitation saying he would no longer be able to provide meaningful assistance due to his resignation. Yunus Carrim, chair of the standing committee of finance, told Fin24, “In fact it is precisely Mr Jooste that has most to account for in the collapse of the Steinhoff shares and its implications for a wide range of people in our country and elsewhere in the world.”
