West Virginia-based jockey Jose Montano earned four times times the votes of Irad Ortiz Jr. and was named the 2012 champion apprentice jockey at Saturday’s Eclipse Awards. A 26-year-old native of Mexico, Montano tied for second in the overall standings at Charles Town in early 2012, then won the meet’s next three titles. He recorded the first stakes win of his career this September and won 187 races between January and mid-October.
