The New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale two-day Book 2 kicked off on Thursday, with the momentum from the four-day Book 1 carrying over for the newly reformatted sale. Of the 181 lots catalogued, 134 sold, resulting in a clearance rate of 74%. The gross was NZ$6,353,000, bringing the over all Karaka aggregate to NZ$90,052,000. The average was NZ$47,410 and the median was NZ$40,000. Little Avondale Stud stallion Per Incanto was responsible for the sale topper, a colt (lot 885) from the Highden Park draft who was purchased by Hong Kong-based Upper Bloodstock for NZ$200,000.
The chestnut topper is out of the winning Lago Rider (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}). She is a half-sister to GSW Big Chill (Aus) (Artie Schiller) and listed winners Hard Stride (Aus) (Street Sense) and Utah Saints (Aus) (God's Own {Aus}) produced by the SP Hard Rider (NZ) (Maroof).
“He has had an absolutely massive sale so far,” said Sam Williams of Little Avondale Stud, as Per Incanto has had 14 yearlings sell for an average of NZ$63,036 and a gross of NZ$882,500. “He had Lanciato (NZ) win a stakes race [Listed Carrington S.] in Australia just 24 hours before the sale started which was just gold. That really reinforced to the Australian buyers that he is a serious horse they should be looking at.”
Rich Hill Stud's first-season sire Proisir (Aus) (Choisir {Aus}) sired the second dearest lot, a bay colt (lot 766) consigned by Mapperley Stud for NZ$160,000. Waterford Bloodstock was the successful bidder. A half-brother to G1 Auckland Cup runner-up Rose of Virginia (NZ) (Thorn Park {Aus}) and GSP Touche (NZ) (Thorn Park {Aus}), the bay's third dam is the Group 3 winner Luskin Lady (Aus) (Luskin Star {Aus}).
“He's a lovely, athletic colt with great movement,” said Mike Rennie of Waterford.
Added Simms Davison of Mapperley, “I think he has definitely benefitted from the new structure of the sale, as he probably could have gone into the Book 1 catalogue and got a bit lost there, but in Book 2 he was one of the standout lots.”
Lot 807, by Windsor Park's Charm Spirit (Ire), set the pace for yearling fillies on Thursday, bringing NZ$100,000 from John Chalmers Bloodstock Services. Out of Egeria (Ire), who is a half-sister to MSW and MGSP Inglenook (Ire) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}), the roan's third dam is G2 Ribblesdale S. heroine Gull Nook (GB) (Mill Reef). Curraghmore consigned the September foal.
The final day of Book 2 features lots 901-1078 from 11 a.m. on Friday. Go to the www.nzb.co.nz for the complete results.
