Kawi Eyes Third Tarzino Trophy

MG1SW Kawi (NZ) (Savabeel {Aus}) galloped in between races at New Plymouth on Sunday, as the Alan Sharrock trainee progresses toward a start in the G1 Tarzino Trophy (formerly Makfi Challenge S.), racing.com reported. Already a two-time winner of the Sept. 2 event, the gelding would become the first horse to win three editions of the event, if he salutes during the first day of the Hawkes Bay Spring Carnival. Working with Lucyinrio (NZ) (Captain Rio {GB}), Kawi was under no pressure during the spin.
“He loathed the conditions today, but he had to have a gallop as we're not going to have a jump-out in the morning like we planned,” Sharrock said. “We're hoping to go to the trials at Foxton next, providing they run them, and then into the [G2] Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa [Aug. 19].”
Continued Sharrock of the tall task facing Kawi, “No horse has done it and ti will be a bit of an ask. He's had a good break for a couple months, but we started on him a little earlier this time and at this stage I think I'm ahead of the eight ball. He's a year older and a little fatter inside, but the good thing is that if we do have a hiccup, then we are ahead and can get him through that. I wouldn't expect he could win the Foxbridge, but if he happened to, then I'd know we were going real good.”
