Kimbear Grinds It Out In Burj Nahar

Saturday's G3 Burj Nahar saw the prolific-winning 8-year-old Heavy Metal (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) go off a short-priced favourite to record his 15th success and his second in this particular contest. For much of the race it appeared the gelding would oblige, especially when Mickael Barzalona pushed him into a two-length lead over Kimbear (Temple City) at the 300-metre marker. However, his stride began to shorten passing the furlong pole as Kimbear staged a rally under Pat Dobbs. Heavy Metal was running on fumes at that stage, as Kimbear began to assert and he forged ahead to beat the staying-on Secret Ambition (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and Musawaat (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) by a length and a quarter with the favourite back in fourth. Doug Watson rarely leaves a Meydan card empty handed and after greeting his latest winner, he said, “We were fortunate with the draw tonight; Pat gave him a great ride and you don't see many horses get passed and come back. He's improving–we thought he was this good anyway.”

The G2 Godolphin Mile in three weeks' time looks on the cards for the American import, when his abundant courage should prove a key asset. Kimbear now has two wins and two seconds from four starts in the UAE, having come from America where his only win was gained in a maiden special on his sixth attempt at Santa Anita in February 2017. Highly tried when sixth in the GI Santa Anita Derby in his next start, he showed he belonged at stakes level when second in the GIII Lazaro Barrero S. at Santa Anita last May. He wound up his U.S. stint with a underwhelming sixth in the GIII Los Alamitos Derby in July, but has certainly come of age since arriving at his current abode.

Pedigree Notes…

A 10th stakes winner for his sire Temple City, Kimbear is one of two winners from two runners for the stakes-placed mare Sky Dreamer (Sky Mesa), who is a half-sister to last year's GI Del Mar Oaks winner Dream Dancing (Tapit). Kimbear's third dam is the former champion Beautiful Pleasure (Maudlin), whose 10 wins included no fewer than six at the highest level. In the last three years Sky Dreamer has foaled a now 2-year-old called Super Comet (Super Comet), unfortunately a dead foal by Colonel John in 2017 and is due to Hard Spun this year.
