Last year's champion 2-year-old filly Champagne Room (Broken Vow) will square off against the very highly regarded 'TDN Rising Star' Unique Bella (Tapit) in Sunday's GII Las Virgenes S. at Santa Anita.
Champagne Room, last seen upsetting the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at 33-1, has been working bullets for her sophomore debut, including a sharp five furlongs in :58 2/5 (1/4) at Santa Anita Jan. 21.
“She's been doing very well,” trainer Peter Eurton said in a recent TDN feature. “We gave her a little bit of time off there–not a lot–and just kind of walked her for a few weeks and she's really enjoying herself right now.”
Unique Bella makes her two-turn debut off a pair of jaw-dropping victories, most recently running off with the seven-furlong GII Santa Ynez S. Jan. 8.
“She's doing very well,” Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said in this week's Down the Shedrow. “I hope [we will see a similar performance to last time]. I think she will be the same.”
Miss Southern Miss (More Than Ready), second behind Champagne Room in last August's GII Sorrento S., makes her first start since impressively capturing the grassy Surfer Girl S. Oct. 10.
