Limato Back In Sprint Cup Contention

Henry Candy and Limato | Racing Post

Trainer Henry Candy has put G1 Darley July Cup winner Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) back in the reckoning for Saturday's G1 Haydock Sprint Cup with the possibility of ground conditions coming up too firm for his stablemate and defending winner Twilight Son (GB) (Kyllachy {GB}). Candy had previously removed Limato from consideration for the Sprint Cup over concerns that it would come too soon after his second to Mecca's Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in the Aug. 19 G1 Nunthorpe S., but the conditioner reported the 4-year-old gelding to be in good form.

“I shall confirm his entry for Saturday,” Candy said. “If it came up too firm for Twilight Son and if Limato looked in the sort of form that he could cope with it, then he would run. It would be the closest between races that he's ever attempted. He's in good form.”

Candy also reported Twilight Son to be in good order. The 4-year-old's primary end-of-season target is the G1 Qipco British Champions Sprint Oct. 15.

“He's in great shape,” Candy said. “The ground is the one deciding factor. If it isn't right for him he won't run. It looks like it could be dry for most of the week so it's a bit 50-50 at the moment. Ascot would be his main target, really.”
