GIUSEPPE THE GREAT (c, 3, Lookin At Lucky–Shawnee Moon, by Forestry) took advantage of fast early fractions and raced over the top of his two chief market rivals to break his maiden at third asking Saturday afternoon at Keeneland. Like the majority of his fellow sophomores, the $100,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling graduate was outrun through the early stages after breaking towards the temporary rail and settled slightly worse than midfield, as favored Switzerland (Speightstown) outsprinted the debuting Marshall Plan (Speightstown) through an opening quarter-mile in :21.80. While the latter two were eyeballing each other nearing the exit to the turn, Giuseppe the Great was making steady progress into about fourth, came away from the inside at the furlong grounds and came home best of all to defeat Marshall Plan by 3/4 of a length, with Snitzerland a gallant third. Souper Fly Over (Ghostzapper) stayed on nicely at the rail to be a close fourth. A debut third, one spot behind Switzerland in a six-furlong Gulfstream maiden Feb. 15, Giuseppe the Great was exiting a narrow defeat to Timeline (Hard Spun) in a seven-furlong maiden Mar. 4. The latter returned to win an Aqueduct allowance by 13 lengths Apr. 6, becoming a 'TDN Rising Star'. The winner is out of a half-sister to GSW Indian Ocean (Stormy Atlantic) and MSW Megan's Halo (Jules) and has a 2-year-old half-sister by Tizway.
