Lope de Vega Colt Starts Out On the Derby Path

Linguistic | Racing Post

Promising in two maiden starts at two, Linguistic ran second to Thursday's ultimately disappointing Craven S. runner Very Talented (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) over a mile at Doncaster in early September and was in that position again behind Tuesday's Listed Feilden S. runner-up Mustajeer (GB) (Medicean {GB}) over the same trip here a fortnight later. Tending to over-race early behind the leaders, the bay moved through to lead with a quarter mile remaining and despite running green was always doing too much for his rivals to contend with. “I thought there was solid form in this and he's still a touch immature,” trainer John Gosden said. “I always knew he wanted a mile and a quarter, being out of a Montjeu mare. William said he was a bit fresh and was left in front sooner than he wanted, but this would have helped him mentally. I think the plan is to go to the [G2] Dante [S. at York May 12] now–he deserves his chance. If he relaxes, I don't see why a mile and a half isn't within his compass. The great thing about the Dante is it tests you over one mile two and 88 yards and those last 88 yards often answer a big question–they certainly did last year.” Click for the Racing Post result.
