Newspaperofrecord, an ultra-impressive debut winner to earn 'TDN Rising Star' status at Saratoga, backed up that designation and then some with a devastating wire-to-wire victory in the GII Miss Grillo S. Sunday at Belmont.

Backed to 3-2 favoritism over yielding ground Aug. 19, the bay filly toyed with her rivals to the tune of a 6 3/4-length romp. Made the public's choice once again here, she set sail for the lead early and dictated terms through splits of :23.44 and :48.26 over the off going. Under an absolute stranglehold by Irad Ortiz, Jr. on the far turn and into the lane, the favorite spurted clear at once when finally set down around the three-sixteenths pole and showed a dazzling turn of foot to kick away from her rivals for another romping score. Varenka got up late for second money.

“I'm happy to hear from Irad right now,” said winning trainer Chad Brown. “I was concerned that the first quarter of a mile maybe she was just running on or she wasn't real responsive to the ride or something, but he said, 'No, she just broke well and I let her go with it.' She was always in the race, and as long as that's the case, I'm fine with it. I was feeling pretty good turning for home, her ears popped and it looked like she was just galloping. You really never know until you turn them loose. She was loaded and pretty impressive, and he geared her down just in the shadow of the wire. Obviously, we're going to run in the Breeders' Cup, so hopefully she didn't do much today.”

Pedigree Notes:

Newspaperofrecord is the 46th stakes winner and 24th graded/group stakes winners for her sire, but just the second of the latter type to get it done on North American soil, following Capla Temptress's heroics in last year's GI Natalma S. She shares a second dam with this year's G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby winner Latrobe (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), as well as GSW Diamond Fields (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who was second on this course in the 2016 GII Sands Point S. Her dam, who captured the 2012 G3 Japan Racing Assocation Sceptre S. in 2012 and was runner-up in the G1 Jaguar Cars Cheveley Park S. the previous year, is responsible for a yearling filly by Gleneagles (Ire).
