Santa Ana Lane (Aus) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) became the second Group 1 winner in the space of a month for his sire Down Under when landing Sunday's G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S. at 25-1. As his odds would suggest, the gelding came into Sunday's contest with far from sparkling form. He had just two wins to his credit from the last 20 months, the most recent of those being at Wagga Wagga in May. Santa Ana Lane checked in fifth, coincidentally behind Lope de Vega's Vega Magic (Aus), in Morphettville's G1 Darley Goodwood S. on May 20, and was shelved for 10 weeks after filling the same spot in a Flemington handicap. He was third, again behind Vega Magic, over soft ground in Caulfield's Listed Regal Roller S. on Aug. 19, and prepped for this with a fourth behind smart sprinter Brave Smash (Jpn) (Tosen Phantom {Jpn}) in a Moonee Valley handicap on Sept. 9. Dropping back to travel about 12 lengths off the pace, Santa Ana Lane was steered wide by Dean Yendall coming into the straight but still had to split runners to find running room. Hitting top gear passing the 100, Santa Ana Lane cut down stablemate Mr Sneaky to provide trainer Anthony Freedman with a Group 1 quinella.
Pedigree Notes…
Santa Ana Lane continues a good year for Lope de Vega in both hemispheres after Vega Magic added the G1 Memsie S. on Sept. 2. The former Patinack Farm shuttler Lope de Vega, who now remains at Ballylinch Stud in Ireland, also has the likes of Grade I/Group 1 winners Capla Temptress (Ire) and The Right Man (GB) to his credit this year, as well as a handful of other group winners. Santa Ana Lane is the first named foal out of Fast Fleet, who is yet to be represented by another runner. She has an unnamed 2-year-old filly by Kuroshio (Aus) and a yearling colt by Toorak Toff (Aus). Fast Fleet is a half-sister to a pair of stakes winners, and it is a family that further back includes GI Oaklawn H. winner Geri (Theatrical {Ire}), Irish Group 2 winner My Special J's (Harlan's Holiday) and Chilean Group 1 winner Linda Linda (Chi) (Bluegrass Cat).
