Denying a whitewash for Wootton Bassett on The Curragh's Saturday card, Moyglare Stud's homebred Suzie Songs (Starspangledbanner) did the unexpected and upset Ballydoyle's 2-9 favourite Flushing Meadows in the G3 Jebel Ali Racecourse and Stables Anglesey Stakes.
For once, Colin Keane was able to get the better of Ryan Moore on the afternoon in the one race that looked least likely. “She's a nice filly with a bit of size and scope and is bred to go further,” the winning rider said. “She wants it and seven or a mile is where you'll see best of her.”
Sent off the 7-2 second favourite backed up 15 days after her winning Cork debut, Suzie Songs was sent up to hassle the highly-regarded market-leader on the front end from the outset. Close home, it was the Ger Lyons runner who had the edge with a short head between them as they pulled 3 1/4 lengths clear of the remainder.
Lyons has a specific target in mind. “I thought it got to her today, so we'll give her a wee break and we'll come back for the [G1] Moyglare [Stud Stakes]. It's a race I'd love to put on the CV,” he said. “He said: “Colin said in Cork that she wanted further and sticking to the original plan her next race would have been seven, but this presented itself during the week with no entries, so here we are.”
“It was a last-minute decision, but the beautiful thing about training for Moyglare is you are allowed to do that, there are no set plans,” the trainer added. “We've a horse last night that ran well [Justiciar] and a nice bunch of horses heading that Moyglare route.”
Still unbeaten – but not the one you perhaps expected!
