Magic Millions Adelaide yearling sale graduate Mahuta has gone from strength to strength this campaign, and the bay colt continued his upward trajectory Saturday when overcoming barrier 20 to score in the A$2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas. Second on debut at Seymour Sept. 9, Mahuta finished fourth two weeks later at Echuca and got off the mark by six lengths a further three weeks after that when stepped up to this distance at Kyneton. The Darren Weir charge hasn't lost since. He took his black-type debut in the Listed Gothic S. at Caulfield Oct. 17, and added Flemington's G3 Carbine Club S. over a mile on Halloween. He took another step up in grade when a clear-cut winner of the G2 Sandown Guineas also over a mile, and was cutting back in this rich test off a near two-month layoff. Rocketing to the lead from the break and getting over to the rail, Mahuta was never headed and never truly tested, getting to the line under mostly hand urging from Brad Rawiller.
“It's easy to say after the event but if you went on his form it was good for a race like this, but it was his first time the reverse way, he had the outside barrier and a bit of weight,” said Weir, who recorded a double having won the Magic Millions Cup with Lucky Hussler (Aus) (Husson {Arg}) one race earlier. “But after they'd gone 300 metres all of that was out of the way because he looked to be on his right leg and he got across into a nice rhythm. He was getting tired late but he was entitled to do that.”
Mahuta was a A$35,000 buy from the Redbank North consignment at the Magic Millions Adelaide sale in 2014, and with this win has now bankrolled A$1,562,460. He led in an exacta for that consignment, with runner-up Single Gaze having also been sold by the operation. Mahuta's dam, Vahine, has a yearling filly by Foxwedge and did not produce a foal last year after coming up barren to I Am Invincible (Aus).
