Undefeated “TDN Rising Star” Mastery (Candy Ride {Arg}) looks to build on the buzz he created during his juvenile campaign as he makes his sophomore bow Saturday in Santa Anita's GII San Felipe S. An impressive debut winner in Arcadia Oct. 22, the Cheyenne Stable colorbearer scored a facile victory in the GIII Bob Hope S. next out at Del Mar Nov. 19 and romped by 7 1/4 lengths last time in the GI Los Alamitos Futurity Dec. 10. The Bob Baffert pupil enters this test off a six-furlong bullet in 1:12 3/5 at Santa Anita Mar. 5. Click here for a feature on Mastery's owner following his win in the Los Al Futurity.
Mastery's biggest competition is likely to come from fellow Grade I winner Gormley (Malibu Moon). Owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moss and trained by John Shirreffs, the bay followed a first-out graduation with a win in the GI Front Runner S. Oct. 1 and was seventh in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Nov. 5. He slugged it out with highly-regarded Baffert trainee American Anthem (Bodemeister) last time over a sloppy track in the GIII Sham S. Jan. 7 and gutted out a head success. Click here for a feature on Gormley and the Mosses.
Kaleem Shah's Iliad (Ghostzapper) captured the GII San Vicente S. last time Feb. 12 in his first start for trainer Doug O'Neill, having previously broke his maiden for Baffert at Los Alamitos Dec. 18.
