Alto Racing's 2015 GI Florida Derby hero Materiality (Afleet Alex–Wildwood Flower, by Langfuhr) was euthanized in July due to complications from laminitis, Alto Racing manager Steve Young confirmed Saturday.
The “TDN Rising Star” was retired in July of 2015 and spent several months at Rood and Riddle undergoing treatment for laminitis. He was later moved to Scott Morrison's farm in Kentucky, where he was treated until his unfortunate death this summer at the age of four.
A $260,000 KEESEP yearling, the John Gunther-bred colt was purchased by Young for $400,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old sale. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Materiality followed his debut win at Gulfstream with victories in the Islamorada H. and the Florida Derby, and was a creditable sixth behind American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) in the GI Kentucky Derby.
