Matt King Coal Works Towards Comeback

Lady Sheila Stable's Matt King Coal (Cool Coal Man), sidelined by a hairline fracture to his pelvis and unraced since finishing fourth in the Apr. 9 GI Wood Memorial S., turned in his first recorded work since March last Saturday at Belmont Park. The 3-year-old worked four furlongs in :50.21 over the Belmont training track. “His first work was great, he looks terrific,” trainer Linda Rice said.

Chester Broman's Modest Maven (Uncle Mo), who topped this year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale (hip 490) when selling for $1 million, will not make her debut until at least next spring, according to Rice.

“We stopped and decided to give her a couple of months to grow up, and we'll pick her up in the spring,” Rice said. “She'll train in Florida for a little bit. She's in New York now, but she'll go down to Ocala to train when she's ready.”
