Trevor McCarthy was the leading rider in Maryland in 2016, earning his second title in the last three years, while Kieron Magee finished with his third consecutive leading trainer title. The 22-year-old McCarthy rode 167 winners and banked $5,353,601 in purse earnings from 933 starters at Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course. Magee saddled the winners of 64 races and was fourth on the earnings list with $1,254,761 in purse money from 316 starters in 2016, after leading Maryland with 65 wins in 2015 and 55 in 2014. MCA Racing Stable and Matthew Schera shared Maryland's leading owner title with 18 wins apiece.
