After being a frequent face in the graded ranks since last April, class relief in the Listed Osunitas Stakes at Del Mar provided Medoro (Honor Code) with her moment in the sun as she rolled by runners late to score.
Twice placed at the elite level, the Honor Code filly was last seen Dec. 25 in the GI American Oaks where she ran third behind MGISW She Feels Pretty (Karakontie {Jpn}) and GISP Kathrynmarissa (American Pharoah). Before that she'd missed winning Santa Anita's GIII Autumn Miss Stakes by a nose to Watchtower (Demarchelier {GB}) and was the runner-up the race before that in the Aug. 17 GI Del Mar Oaks at this venue last year as Iscreamuscream (Twirling Candy) took the lion's share of the prize.
Settled well off the pace as Grand Slam Smile (Smiling Tiger) stepped out eagerly to lead through an opening quarter in :23.05, a half in :47.12, and six panels in 1:11.82 with Lunar Impact (GB) (Zoustar {Aus}) never far away, the 5-2 shot was steadily improving her position from between runners. They closed ranks coming off the far bend, and the Peter Eurton trainee took the overland route as the field swung for home where 3-2 favorite Queen Maxima (Bucchero) was taken to the inside path. Going by competition with a full head of steam, Medoro overhauled Grand Slam Smile inside the final sixteenth as that one gamely held on for second. Lunar Impact too stuck around late to claim third. The betting choice finished off the board after traffic trouble left her confined to the fence and unable to produce her usual patented rally.
The victress hails from the immediate female family of GI Kentucky Derby hero Giacomo (Holy Bull) and his half-brother MGISW Tiago (Pleasant Tap). Their half-sisters GSW & MGISP Stanwyck (Empire Maker) and Sea Jewel (Sea Hero) also claimed graded black-type in their racing careers, and the latter went on to become the granddam of South African Graded-placed Mirage (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}). The second dam is a full-sister to Giacomo and in addition to producing Achira, Medoro's dam, she also claims Veronique (Mizzen Mast), whose son is 'TDN Rising Star' SW Nashville (Speightstown). Medoro is Achira's first to the races, and her most accomplished thus far. She has since produced a juvenile filly named We All love Harper (Honor A.P.) as well as a 2025 colt by Not This Time.
