Having tried a mile for the first time in his career earlier this season G1 Darley July Cup hero Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) is to sample another new trip next week when he tackles the five furlong G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. at York on Friday. Following a piece of work on Friday morning trainer Henry Candy expressed his satisfaction with Paul Jacobs' 4-year-old and has supplemented him for the York race. “He worked yesterday and is fine and goes to York next week,” said Candy. Limato has shown his best form on fast ground and a favourable forecast for York swayed connections into handing their star a fresh challenge instead of targeting races between six and eight furlongs, where he has already proven his mettle.
Limato was one of three horses supplemented for the Nunthorpe, Charlie Hills' progressive Silver Rainbow (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) and the Mark Johnston trained juvenile Yalta (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) being the other pair. Johnston's Yalta could be an intriguing runner. The colt showed tremendous speed to win the G3 Victoria Racing Club Molecomb S. at Goodwood and receives up to 24lbs in weight allowance from rivals. Also standing their ground at this confirmation stage is leading fancy Profitable (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), fourth last time behind Limato at Newmarket but previously a winner of the G1 King's Stand S. at Royal Ascot over five furlongs and last year's winner Mecca's Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who showed she was as good as ever when winning the G2 Kilfrush Stud Sapphire S. at The Curragh last month.
