Moody Dismantles Racing Operation

Peter Moody has begun the arduous and emotional task of dismantling his large scale racing operation following his decision to retire from training. First task on his agenda was to auction off all his racing equipment that included everything from tack and yard equipment to feed bins and even lead ponies and horse vans. The most expensive item being a truck bought by fellow trainer Ciaron Maher for A$175,000. 'There's no turning back now, everything is gone – lock, stock and barrel,” Moody told racing.com. Although Moody ended his career on a high note, saddling Flamberge (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) to win the G1 William Reid S. last week, he recognises the economic and social impact his decision will have on the wider racing community. “That's the sad thing about all this, it doesn't only affect me, my family and my staff – it affects a lot of staff outside,” he said. “We've got 30 horses in pre-training at Mornington, 30 horses in pre-training at Albury and 30 horses in pre-training at Pakenham – we have various farms that have 30-40 spellers. So unfortunately the downside of this is it doesn't just affect Peter Moody, it affects probably 200 people. I have heard from some of my suppliers that they've already had to make staff redundant as well, which is very sad.”
