Inglis's Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne is one that continues to see its profile grow year-on-year. With a solid list of graduates to its credit thus far this season, and following on from a strong start to the season at Magic Millions and Inglis's Classic Yearling Sale in Sydney, hopes will be high that the 770 yearlings catalogued on Mar. 4 to 7 can take the sale that produced Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}) for A$210,000 to yet new heights.
Led by a A$1.4-million son of I Am Invincible bought by Ciaron Maher, last year's Premier Sale enjoyed an average of A$120,262 (+8.7%) and median of A$100,000 (+17.6%), while the clearance rate was an admirable 88%. Each of those figures has risen year-on-year for the past four years.
Stakes-winning graduates in the first half of the season have included the A$85,000 Hey Doc (Aus) (Duporth {Aus}), who took his earnings past A$1.7-million with a win in the G1 Manikato S.; the A$60,000 mare Fuhryk (Aus) (Star Witness {Aus}), a listed winner and Group 1-placed; Saturday's G1 Australian Guineas favourite Cliff's Edge (Aus) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}), who was bought for A$60,000 and has earned over A$630,000; G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S. winner Santa Ana Lane (Aus) (Lope de Vega {Ire}); and the dual group-winning filly Booker (Aus) (Written Tycoon {Aus}).
This year's catalogue includes 91 siblings to stakes winners, such as a half-sister to champion filly Faint Perfume (Aus) (Shamardal) by popular first-season sire Deep Field (Aus) (lot 224); a So You Think (NZ) half-sister to Group 1-winning sprinter Ortensia (Aus) (Testa Rossa {Aus}) (lot 226); a Lonhro (Aus) half-brother to G1 Myer Classic winner Politeness (Aus) (Street Sense) (lot 268); a half-sister to Mongolian Khan (Aus) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) by another hot first-season sire in Brazen Beau (Aus) (lot 298); a full-sister to G1 Blue Diamond S. winner Extreme Choice (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}) (lot 378); and an I Am Invincible (Aus) half-brother to champion filly Alinghi (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) (lot 552).
The 103 yearlings out of stakes winners catalogued include a Medaglia d'Oro colt who is the first foal out of the G1 New Zealand Oaks winner Miss Mossman (NZ) (Mossman {Aus}) (lot 155); a Tavistock (NZ) filly out of Group 1 winner Veloce Bella (NZ) (Volksraad {GB}) (lot 200), who has produced two winners from two runners; and a Deep Field colt who is the third foal out of G1 Sires' Produce S. and G1 Thousand Guineas winner Yosei (Aus) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) (lot 216).
The sale will begin at noon on Sunday, and the first day will include the Blue Riband session, featuring 42 yearlings handpicked by the Inglis team as Classic or staying types.
