Set some demanding tasks when second in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot June 17 and fourth in the G1 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly July 10, Nemoralia was back at her best level here as she outclassed some fair yardsticks for a first pattern-race success. She has certainly taken connections places in recent months, finishing second in the GI Frizette S. at Belmont in October and third in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland the following month before returning to capture the Listed Michael Seely Memorial S. over a mile by six lengths here May 13. Her effort in the Coronation can be upgraded, as she is not as effective on soft, while she seemed to run below-par in the Prix Jean Prat so the market support was understandable with the rain not sufficient to deaden the ground.
Held up in mid-division by a typically confident Jamie Spencer off the blistering early tempo, the dark bay was asked the question halfway up the straight and duly darted to the inner to grab the lead approaching the furlong pole en route to a commanding success. So Beloved, who had shown up so well when seventh in the G1 Sussex S. last month, could not live with her finishing burst which gives credence to the form. “Everything went great and she was really impressive,” commented her rider who is enjoying a purple patch this week. “She wants a mile and has been unfortunate with the weather this year, so Jeremy wanted to run her in a race she could win. She has one sustained run–most horses can quicken for a bit, but she can quicken for a long way.”
Trainer Jeremy Noseda is keen to take her back to the States this year, but has some other targets closer to home beforehand. “She was in good form and she was a group one filly dropping back into group three company. She's done what she should do and I'm delighted to see her go and do it,” he explained. “She had a hard race at Royal Ascot and ran a bit flat when I ran her back too quickly in France, so that was my mistake. The [Sept. 10 G2] Park Stakes at Doncaster will be next and then we'll head to America and look at the [GI] Queen Elizabeth for three-year-old fillies on October 14 in Keeneland. We've got the choice of races at the Breeders' Cup, as she goes on the dirt as well, so we'll keep moving forward now.” So Beloved's owning syndicate Sprint Thoroughbred Racing's Steve Barker said of the runner-up, “We had the perfect ground, the perfect trip and the race was run to suit us, but the other horse just went by us like the group one filly she is. We'll probably go to Goodwood next for the race he won last year [the G3 Supreme S.], because he wouldn't have a penalty. At the end of the year he'll go for the [G1 Prix de la] Foret [at Chantilly Oct. 2], there aren't many options for seven-furlong horses.”
Nemoralia's dam Alina was second in the GII Fantasy S. and emerges from the family of American Royale (American Standard), winner of the GII Adirondack S. and GII Prioress S., the GI Mother Goose S., GI Ruffian H. and GI Gazelle H. heroine Stellar Jayne (Wild Rush) and also Starrer (Dynaformer), who hit the heights when capturing the GI Santa Margarita Invitational H. and GI Santa Maria H. She also has a 2-year-old full-brother to the winner and a 2016 colt by Bodemeister. She was bred to Medaglia d'Oro for 2017.
