Steven Kourpas, a West Virginia Racing Commission steward at Mountaineer, passed away Wednesday at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, due to complications from open heart surgery. The 59-year-old started his career in horse racing as part of the starting gate crew at Waterford Park Racetrack and worked his way up to becoming a steward. Kourpas was also worked for the Newell Volunteer Fire Department and later the Chester department. He is survived by his mother, wife Mindy and five children. Visitation will be held Mar. 28 from 12:00 to 8:00p.m. at Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester, Pennsylvania with services to follow Tuesday at 1:00p.m.
