In receipt of significant weight from the progressive Contentment and Packing Pins, Multivictory was up in the final jump to take down the market leaders as the distant third choice in the wagering.
A good fourth in a Class 1 over this distance in his first run of the season Sept. 13, Multivictory was only 10th in Class 2 Oct. 10, but rebounded to upset a strong bunch in the Class 1 Chevalier Cup H. at odds of 78-1 going a mile Nov. 29. He most recently ran the promising 4-year-old Sun Jewellery (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) to a nose in a track-and-distance Class 1 on International Day Dec. 13 and was backed late to just under 10-1.
Typically prominent in the run, Multivictory landed about two from the tail as Exciting Dream (GB) (Bertolini) somewhat surprisingly took up the running with Packing Pins setting up shop just to his outside. Contentment, exiting a fifth in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile, was forced to cover some ground on the turn while facing the breeze, but nevertheless raced up to Packing Pins in upper stretch and the two most-fancied runners looked set to run the quinella. But Multivictory, switched out with a little less than a quarter-mile to race, quickened up impressively in the final furlong to be up in the waning strides.
“It was not the plan to stay behind, but the instructions were to go forward after the start and settle in second or third in the early stages,” said winning jockey Howard Cheng. “But the trainer told me the horse might not be fast enough to stay in front, and if that was the case, take a hold of the horse.”
