Makoto Kaneko raced both Deep Impact and King Kamehameha, sire and damsire of Wagnerian, and Kaneko looks to have a good one produced from his two champions in the form of the bay who remained unbeaten in his stakes debut at Tokyo on Saturday. A debut winner going 10 furlongs on July 16, Wagnerian dropped back a panel at Hanshin two months later and won at allowance level by 2 1/2 lengths. Dropping back to travel at least 10 lengths off the pace with Maurice's full-brother Lucas right on his heels here, Wagnerian began to work his way closer rounding the turn but still had plenty to do at the top of the lane. Kicking into gear down the middle of the track passing the 400 with Lucas still shadowing him, Wagnerian never looked in danger of losing thereafter, drawing clear to win with ease in a handride. Wagnerian is a full-brother to Kaneko's SW & GSP Tenderly Voice, and GI Frizette S. winner Sutra (Meadowlake) appears under the third dam. Wagnerian's second dam, a $280,000 purchase for Kaneko out of the 1996 Barretts March sale, was a six-time black-type winner of over $4.3 million.
