NJ Assembly Approves Sports Betting Bill

The New Jersey State Assembly voted Thursday to approve the most recent version of a bill to allow sports betting in New Jersey. The vote comes two days after the state senate approved the measure, which now heads to Governor Chris Christie. The governor has 45 days to veto or approve the legislation.
Christie vetoed a similar bill in August over concerns that it would be overturned in the federal courts. The new version of the bill contains language clarifying that sports gambling at the state's casinos and racetracks would be overseen by private interests.
In anticipation of the current legislation, Monmouth Park officals last week announced the formation of the Independent Sports Wagering Association to regulate the state's sports gambling.
Senator Joe Kyrillos, a primary sponsor of the bill, urged Christie to approve the measure.
“Sports betting can assist New Jersey's struggling casino industry and with our challenges at Monmouth Park Racetrack,” said Kyrillos. “Both houses of the legislature acted quickly to approve this critical measure, and I am confident Governor Christie will join our efforts to help protect Atlantic City and Monmouth Park jobs by signing the bill into law.”
