Notable US-Breds in Japan: Jan. 28, 2018

In this ongoing series, Alan Carasso takes a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are Sunday's horses of interest running at Chukyo and Kyoto Racecourses:

Sunday, January 28, 2018
1st-CKO, ¥9,550,000 ($88k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800m
CAT TONGUE (f, 3, Tapit&log=">Tapit–Wile Cat, by Storm Cat) failed to make much of an impression when well beaten in a newcomers' event over 1400 grassy meters at Kyoto Nov. 5. The $300K KEESEP yearling should appreciate this surface switch, as her half-sister Shumoos (Distorted Humor) was Grade III-placed on dirt in this country. Her dam, a $1.3m KEESEP yearling, is a daughter of MGISW Strategic Maneuver (Cryptoclearance) and is a full sister to GSW Cat Fighter. Cat Tongue's full-sister was a $700K KEESEP purchase by Don Alberto Corp. last fall. B-Brushwood Stable (PA)

6th-KYO, ¥11,400,000 ($105k), Newcomers, 3yo, 1600mT
SPADA (c, 3, Speightstown–A Bit of Humor, by Distorted Humor) cost owner Kenji Ryotokuji $600K at FTSAUG in 2016, the joint fourth-priciest of 40 yearlings for this successful sire that year. A May 3 foal, he is out of a winning full-sister to MSW Saratoga Humor, dam of the MGSW distaff sprinter Heart Stealer (Speightstown). B-Fairlawn Farm (KY)

Stakes Runners: Best Warrior (Majestic Warrior), G3 Negishi S., 1400m, ¥72m ($664k)
