The New York Racing Association has created the Belmont Stakes Scholarships, a new initiative that will award five $3,000 scholarships annually to graduating seniors pursuing higher education, NYRA announced Tuesday. The students will be selected from the Sewanhaka Central High School District, which includes Sewanhaka High School, Elmont Memorial High School, Floral Park Memorial High School, H. Frank Carey High School, and New Hyde Park Memorial High School.
Applications for the scholarship are now open, with awards supporting students who will attend an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or technical trade school during the 2026-27 academic year. Eligible students are encouraged to apply here before May 29, 2026.
“NYRA is committed to supporting our local community in meaningful ways,” said David O'Rourke, NYRA President & CEO. “Beyond just a financial contribution, we intend to work closely with students to support their educational journeys through internship opportunities, career guidance and mentorship. We thank the Sewanhaka Central High School District for collaborating with NYRA on this initiative.”
The Belmont Stakes Scholarships expand NYRA's Leg Up! educational program, which introduces students to career opportunities within the thoroughbred racing industry. Since 2024, the Leg Up! program has welcomed more than 800 high school students to NYRA properties, offering behind-the-scenes experiences and exposure to careers across racing, equine care, hospitality, marketing, and operations.
“The Sewanhaka Central High School District appreciates the growing partnership with NYRA and the Belmont Park community,” said Regina Agrusa, Superintendent of the Sewanhaka Central High School District. “NYRA's new scholarship program for our graduating seniors demonstrates their vested interest in the success of our students. We are grateful for NYRA's support.”
