The New York State Gaming Commission unanimously approved an extensive set of medication rules which establish threshold limits for 24 therapeutic medications and restrict the use of three corticosteroids in racehorses during a meeting Monday. The rules, modeled on uniform medication rules developed by the Association of Racing Commissioners International, are expected to take effect Jan. 1. They were first introduced to the commission last November and bring New York regulations into line with other states which have implemented the MidAtantic Uniform Medication Program.
Officials from the New York Racing Association were quick to applaud the new measures.
“These new rules are in the best interest of the health and welfare of the racehorses, the safety of all participants and further promote the integrity of Thoroughbred horse racing,” said New York Racing Association Chief Executive Officer and President Christopher Kay. “The adoption of these regulations by the Gaming Commission is another step forward in the ongoing efforts of Thoroughbred racing regulators in many states and other participants to adopt uniform and effective equine medication rules across the country.” For a list of the drugs and thresholds from the New York State Gaming Commissions, click here.
