Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Today's Observations includes a handful of well-related Juddmonte homebreds.
3.05 Newbury, Cond, £16,000, 3yo, 10f 6yT
SHUTTER SPEED (GB) (Dansili {GB}) has drawn the attention of the workwatchers in Newmarket this spring and returns in the race won in 2007 by the subsequent G1 Epsom Oaks heroine Light Shift (Kingmambo) and two years ago by the eventual G1 Prix de Diane victress Star of Seville (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}). Like the latter, the Juddmonte homebred from the family of Showcasing (GB) and the G1 Underwood S. winner Foreteller (GB) (Dansili {GB}) who scored on debut at Yarmouth in October hails from the John Gosden stable. She is joined by another Khalid Abdullah entry from that yard in the similarly once-raced maiden winner Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), a relative of the smart Dance Routine (GB) (Sadler's Wells), and they have a fair yardstick to aim at in the Brian Meehan-trained G1 Racing Post Trophy fourth Raheen House (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}).
3.40 Newbury, Mdn, £8,500, 3yo, f, 10f 6yT
MORI (GB) (Frankel (GB)">Frankel {GB}) is arguably the prize pick of all of Khalid Abdullah's homebred progeny by his horse-in-a-lifetime, being out of the six-time Group 1 winner Midday (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Introduced by Sir Michael Stoute in the maiden won by the subsequent Epsom Oaks heroines Eswarah (GB) (Unfuwain) and Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) in recent times, the February-foaled half-sister to the stable's G3 Sandown Classic Trial winner Midterm (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) encounters another newcomer of note in Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Nafaayes (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), a Charles Hills trainee whose dam is a full-sister to Haafhd (GB).
5.10 Newbury, Debutantes, £7,500, 3yo, f, 7fT
SUPERIORITYCOMPLEX (IRE) (Hard Spun">Hard Spun) debuts for the same longstanding Ballymacoll Stud-Sir Michael Stoute partnership which combined so well with her imposing half-sister Abingdon (Street Cry {Ire}), a dual listed winner last term and one of the more promising older fillies in training. The relative of the brilliant Islington (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) encounters Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum's homebred Omneeya (GB) (Frankel (GB)">Frankel {GB}), a Marco Botti-trained daughter of the G2 Greyville Fillies Guineas scorer Amanee (Aus) (Pivotal {GB}) who descends from the great Miesque (Nureyev).
5.20 Dundalk, Cond, €20,000, 2yo, 5f (AWT)
MOUNT WELLINGTON (IRE) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) takes part in the race which launched his subsequent G1 Phoenix S.-winning stablemate Caravaggio (Scat Daddy) 12 months ago, having missed the maiden at Naas on the opening day of the Irish flat season. Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith's €475,000 ARQAUG son of the G3 Brownstown S. winner Marvada (Ire) (Elusive City) encounters four rivals, three of which have vital previous experience.
5.40 Newbury, Debutantes, £7,500, 3yo, f, 7fT
TIRANIA (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) was a €370,000 purchase by Yvonne Jacques at the Goffs Orby Sale who starts out for the William Haggas stable in a race which has been won by some smart types including the subsequent G1 Pretty Polly S. scorer Promising Lead (GB) (Danehill). The sister to the G3 Nell Gwyn S. winner Penkenna Princess (Ire), who was also beaten a short-head by Saoire (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, is one of several of interest including Kaniz Bloodstock Investments Ltd's Princess de Lune (Ire) (Shamardal), a Roger Charlton-trained full-sister to the G2 P B Lawrence S. winner and MG1SP Puissance de Lune (Ire) who failed to meet her reserve at 300,000gns at Tattersalls October.
