Observations: May 19, 2017

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Today's Observations features the first runner from the second crop of Frankel.

2.00 Newbury, Mdn, £10,000, 2yo, 6fT

Juddmonte homebred WESTERLAND (GB) (Frankel (GB)">Frankel {GB}) is a son of the stakes-winning Arabesque (GB) (Zafonic) and is thus a half-brother to four black-type performers headed by MGSW G1 Middle Park S. third and sire Showcasing (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), and stakes-winning G3 Jersey S. runner-up and sire Camacho (GB) (Danehill). In a race won in 2009 by MG1SW sire Canford Cliffs (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}), rivals to the John Gosden trainee include Aiya (Ire) (Declaration of War), a half to G1 Irish Derby-winning sire Frozen Fire (Ger) (Montjeu {Ire}), from the Andrew Balding barn.

2.15 Saint-Cloud, Mdn, €30,000, 3yo, f, 10 1/2fT

SPECIALITY (FR) (Lawman {Fr}) was denied by a nose going one mile here on debut at the beginning of this month and the Alain de Royer-Dupre incumbent faces eight rivals in this second start. She is a daughter of MG1SW and multiple highweight Pride (Fr) (Peintre Celebre) and is a half-sister to dual Group 2 winner and G1 Hong Kong Vase third One Foot in Heaven (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}).

2.45 Saint-Cloud, Mdn, €30,000, 3yo, c/g, 10 1/2fT

PARABELLUM (IRE) (Dubawi {Ire}) was notably green when splitting Ratiocination (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}) and fellow Andre Fabre trainee Oshayger (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), a son of Zagora (Fr) (Green Tune), on debut at Chantilly last month. Godolphin's son of the G3 Prix de Lutece winner Pacifique (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) from the family of the G1 Irish Oaks heroine Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) has since received a boost as the winner went on to earn 'TDN Rising Star' status back at Chantilly last week.

4.15 Newbury, Mdn, £10,000, 3yo, 10fT

DUBAI THUNDER (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is another high-profile first-timer in the Godolphin silks, being a half-brother to the operation's leading performer of recent times, Farhh (GB) (Pivotal {GB}). Saeed bin Suroor has the Derby entry engaged in a line-up that includes fellow newcomer Peterport (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}), Lady Rothschild's son of the G1 Sun Chariot S. winner Spinning Queen (GB) (Spinning World) who represents the John Gosden stable.
