After a series of unlucky trips, including an eighth-place finish in the GI Kentucky Derby, the stretch-running Mo Tom (Uncle Mo) seeks back-to-back wins for the first time in his career in Saturday's GIII Super Derby at Louisiana Downs.
The GIII LeComte S. winner finally stayed out of harm's way and romped to a three-length tally while making his first start since the First Saturday in May in the $500,000 Ohio Derby at Thistledown June 25. The troubled GII Risen Star S. third and GII Louisiana Derby fourth, owned by G M B Racing, covered four furlongs in :49 4/5 at Churchill Downs Sept. 5. He is the 7-5 morning-line favorite.
In what appears to be a pretty paceless race on paper, the tactical Dalmore (Colonel John) figures to hold an edge over the likely chalk. The GIII Affirmed S. winner reported home a well-beaten fifth against older horses in California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit)'s GI TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar Aug. 20.
Texas Chrome (Grasshopper), third behind Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) in the GIII Matt Winn S. June 18 and runner-up to American Freedom (Pulpit) in the GIII Iowa Derby July 1, captured the traditional local prep Prelude S. for this Aug. 6.
