In this week's column, Bill Oppenheim previews the upcoming start to the American yearling sales season with a look at the sires represented in the Fasig-Tipton July and Saratoga sales. He also points out that there is a significant decrease in the number of horses catalogued for the two auctions year over year, resulting in the temporary postponement–at least nominally–of the New Sire Showcase at the July sale and the consolidation of that event into a single session for 2011. Many would have expected the cutbacks to come from the lower tiers of the market, but the evidence seems to show that all areas are affected, Oppenheim offers.
