Arms Runner overcame some traffic trouble on the turn and flew home to follow up a promising debut win with a score in the Desert Code S. at Santa Anita. Graduating at first asking over course and distance Apr. 20, the $525,000 OBS April buy, easily the most expensive purchase from his sire thus far, stalked the pace from fourth between horses past a :21.36 quarter.
Dropping back one spot while saving ground on the turn, the gray was boxed in nearing the top of the lane and waited until inside the three-sixteenths pole to find daylight. Angling out, he easily reeled in seemingly home-free favorite Cistron with 100 yards to go and edged clear.
“I stuck my neck out buying this horse,” trainer Peter Miller revealed. “I never push owners to buy horses, but I pushed pretty hard for Gary [Hartunian] to buy this one. I was a little concerned if we would get through or not at the top of the stretch. Norberto [Arroyo Jr.] can ride a little over confidently for me sometimes. He's a great rider and he gave this horse a great ride. He seemed to gallop out well.”
The winner's dam, a $17,000 KEENOV purchase by Ocala Stud in 2010, has a 2-year-old filly by High Cotton and a yearling filly by Scat Daddy.
