Payne Could Miss Shergar Cup

Michelle Payne | Emma Berry

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne will have to pass a medical exam on Saturday morning in order to ride in Ascot's Shergar Cup later in the day. Payne was feeling unwell when she arrived in the UK from Australia, and apprentice Hollie Doyle is on standby to replace her on the Girls team for the international jockey competition should be declared unfit to participate.

Ascot Head of Communications Nick Smith said, “Michelle is feeling a little better today, I understand, and hopefully by tomorrow she'll be fighting fit. As this is a unique event it made sense to put plans in place; we didn't want to be rushing around in the morning looking for somebody to step in. Hollie has a ride at Lingfield at 6:10 p.m. but as the last race here is 4 p.m. she won't miss anything.”
