On a night of landslides, the vote for champion 3-year-old colt was won by a whisker. Separated by just three votes, GI Kentucky Derby hero Animal Kingdom (Leroisdesanimaux {Brz}) edged GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Caleb's Posse (Posse) to take the honor. Team Valor International's Mark Polivka accepted the honor on the behalf of Barry Irwin's racing partnership. Animal Kingdom also won the GIII Spiral S. and finished a closing second in the GI Preakness S. He exited an unplaced effort in the GI Belmont S. with an injury and was sidelined for the remainder of the year. H.
