Pioneerof the Nile (Empire Maker–Star of Goshen, by Lord at War {Arg}), a MGISW, has been retired with a soft tissue injury to his left front leg, Zayat Stables announced. Stud plans for the three-year-old are yet to be discussed. ìWe noticed a little filling in his leg when we took the bandages off, and we were hoping he just rapped it,î his trainer Bob Baffert said. ìI'm in shock. I was getting so excited about that horse. I loved the way he had been training. He was getting stronger with age and was just starting to mature.î Winner of the GI CashCall Futurity at two, the dark bay added another Grade I success when he took this year's Santa Anita Derby. He was subsequently second to Mine That Bird (Birdstone) in the GI Kentucky Derby. His final start was an 11th in GI Preakness S. May 16.
