Plenty of Talent on Display in Champagne

Complexity | Sarah K. Andrew

Trainer Chad Brown will saddle a pair of runaway 2-year-old maiden winners in a loaded renewal of Saturday's GI Champagne S., a 'Win and You're In' for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Complexity (Maclean's Music) earned his 'TDN Rising Star' badge with a powerful 4 1/4-length wire-to-wire debut score going six furlongs at Saratoga Sept. 3. His stablemate Aurelius Maximus (Pioneerof the Nile) is the only runner in the 10-horse field with a win at this one-mile distance, graduating in the slop by 7 3/4 lengths at second asking here Sept. 9.

“They both trained well together and they are ready for the Champagne,” said Brown, who won the 2016 Champagne with Practical Joke (Into Mischief). “They both seem like they are top-quality, so I'm confident in both of them.”

Call Paul (Friesan Fire), the lone graded winner entered, puts his perfect two-for-two record on the line after posting a determined win in the GII Saratoga Special S. Aug. 12.

Trophy Chaser (Twirling Candy) makes the trip from South Florida after graduating by a pole in the Gulfstream slop Aug. 25, good for a well-documented 96 Beyer Speed Figure. The dark bay has been working bullets at owner/trainer Juan Avila's Hallandale base since, including a five-furlong move in :59 2/5 (1/12) Sept. 28.

A pair of promising Saratoga debut winners from the Aug. 18 card–Endorsed (Medaglia d'Oro) and Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB})-both return in this ambitious spot as well.
